Muscat: A vintage Dior wedding dress worn by an Omani woman has been put on display at a first-of-its-kind local fashion museum.
Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art has received a wedding dress for display that was designed by fashion house Christian Dior, and worn by an Omani lady in the 1980s.

“A friend of the museum’s donated this Christian Dior dress, which was especially commissioned for an Omani lady in the 80s, and is considered a high-end global design. The museum regularly receives such contributions from local and regional fashion experts and designers,” a representative said.
The dress will be on display at the Fashion Museum, which falls under Ghalya’s Museum.
The Fashion Museum section is the first of its kind in the Sultanate and currently has a soft opening for public visits.
The Fashion Museum will display a collection of traditional local and regional dresses from the past and present, as well as modern international costumes.
“We hope the museum takes the Oman fashion industry to an international level, as it hosts fashion icons from the around the world. Omani artists would also have a space to display their creativity, as well as introduce a new world of arts and industries to the community,” a representative said.
“We plan to make it a prime centre for costume aesthetics and fashion. We’ve already displayed works by designers, both from the country and from abroad. These include Dibaj, Hanaa Al Wahaib, Nawal Al Hooti, and Kubra Al Qaseer. Designer Reem Al Zadjali also had her fashion shoot at our museum in June 2016,” the representative added.
Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art opened its doors to visitors in January 2011, and was established as a dream project by Her Highness Sayyida Dr Ghalya bint Fahr bin Taimour Al Said.
Located near the Muttrah Fort, Ghalya’s Museum also hosts the Old House, which models a group of typical Omani houses from the period of 1950 to 1975.
“The Old House tells the story of Omanis and their deeply rooted heritage, customs and traditions. The Wedding, the Kitchen and Display Rooms, the Mother and Children’s Room, the Winter Room and the Majlis (Living Room) describe the earlier Omani lifestyle,” a representative explained.
Ghalya’s Museum also houses an Art Gallery, which showcases Omani and international modern art to the world.
The museum is open Saturday to Friday from 9.30am to 6pm for visitors.
