Tennis: Bacsinszky downs French favourite Mladenovic

Paris: French favourite Kristina Mladenovic skidded out of a storm-struck French Open on Tuesday, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Timea Bacsinszky in a rain-interrupted quarterfinal.
Thirteenth seed Mladenovic had been hoping to become the first French champion since Mary Pierce in 2000, but never really clicked on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
An opening set where both players struggled to hold serve was sealed when Bacsinszky hit her third ace, and the Swiss held her nerve in the second set to close it out.
Bacsinszky, a semifinalist here in 2015, will next meet either Jelena Ostapenko or Caroline Wozniacki.
Earlier, the two men's quarterfinal matches have been postponed until Wednesday after rain disrupted play at Roland Garros, organisers said.
Nine-time champion Rafa Nadal was due to play fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta and defending champion Novak Djokovic was set to take on Austrian Dominic Thiem.
Play was interrupted at 1327 GMT because of rain and storms, with local favourite Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 1-1 down against Swiss Timea Bacsinszky on Court Philippe Chatrier.
On Court Suzanne Lenglen, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was 6-4, 2-5 up against 19-year-old Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
