This week marks the 10th anniversary of Cyclone Gonu that had drastically affected Oman between the 1st and 7th of June, 2007.
It is believed to be the strongest cyclone to threaten the Arabian Peninsula since record-keeping started in 1945.
PTC: BEING A LOW-LYING AREA, THIS REGION WAS ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY THE CYCLONE. TO MY LEFT IS MCDONALDS AND ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO WERE HERE AT THAT TIME WOULD REMEMBER THAT MCDONALDS AND NANDOS WERE COMPLETELY SUBMERGED UNDER WATER WITH JUST THE GOLDEN ARCHES VISIBLE
More than 20,000 were evacuated and at least 10,000 cars were damaged in the floods.
The Sultanate had suffered severe water shortages and electricity cuts mainly caused by the damage to the Ghubra power and desalination plants.
The cyclone also damaged roads and bridges and streets had turned into turbulent rivers.
However, today, Oman is much better prepared for such a large scale disaster with government-built weather stations, better roads, and emergency evacuation facilities.
