Muscat: ESG Football Academy Oman teams won the second and third places in the JSSL Singapore Sevens football tournament organised in the City State recently.
According to a press statement issued by the academy, 24 lucky young football stars from the Sultanate participated in what is known as Asia’s Youth World Cup in Singapore.
Two teams from the ESG Football Academy Oman, which were sponsored by Mazaya Oman LLC and OOCEP, comprised 13 to 16 year olds and took part in the prestigious tournament, competing against teams from over 15 nations from across the globe.
“The JSSL Singapore Sevens tournament, which took place between April 29-May 1 and has been running for five years, attracted over 250 teams, both boys and girls, from all over the world including from the countries like Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea, China, Phillipines, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong,” the statement said.
The ESG Football Academy’s U16 team came so close to bringing the trophy home but missed out on the opportunity after losing the final 1-0 in sudden death extra-time to a very strong Indonisian team.
The U14 team also gave a good account of themselves but lost their semifinal to the eventual winners.
ESG Football Academy Oman’s head coach Jay Wynter and Jamal Al Mahrami, who selected the players for the U14 and U16 age categories from all across the Sultanate, said: “First we would like to thank our sponsors Mazaya Oman LLC and OOCEP for supporting us on this trip. To say we are delighted with how the teams performed is an understatement.
“Both teams performances were outstanding and we could not of asked anymore of the boys. We are sure they would have learnt a lot from this trip and they will certainly be all the better for it.
“ESG Football Academy Oman certainly left our mark in Singapore and we will definitely be back next year to see if we can go one better.”
