Young, vivacious, and a bundle of talent, Mrunal Khimji — a fashion designer and consultant at Mrunal’s Boutique — has taken the style quotient of Oman to new heights.
As she gears up for an exclusive exhibition of her collections in collaboration with design house SO SHRU a fun, chic, value driven contemporary clothing brand that offers modern elegance, she reminisces about her journey so far.
“I’ve learnt a lot from my journey. The world of fashion is constantly changing and I have tried to evolve with it, said Mrunal. Talking about what inspired her to start the boutique; Mrunal said having come from India, a country that has a very deep-rooted heritage and culture, her interests automatically veered towards the world of ethnic fashion.
“Handlooms and embroidery are elements that are intrinsic to me. My love for my Indian heritage and my aspiration to spread it internationally was something that inspired me to become a self-taught fashion designer,” said Mrunal, for whom the journey was fraught with many challenges. “Every learning curve has its own ups and downs, but it teaches you something on a larger scale of life.”
Remembering her initial days, the designer said when she started the boutique, she had a local running production team with price points that matched Indian designers and many did not appreciate that. “But overtime, I’ve managed to overcome that hurdle as my clientele sees the quality, designs, and the service we offer,” said Mrunal, who thinks that the best part of her work is interacting with her clients who trust her and are ready to try and showcase her work with a positive attitude.
“Every client brings something new to the table; they’re my biggest critics, teachers, and supporters. When they’re happy with the product and come back for more, that to me is the biggest gift of all,” she added.
A real feminist at heart, Khimji’s future plans include achieving a great balance between work and family. “At this point my expansion is (progressing) at a steady pace. However, in the near future, we are planning to expand internationally.”
