Oman's cabinet to study a proposal to compensate poor families to ease high fuel price burden

Muscat: Oman’s cabinet will study a proposal to partially compensate poor families who are unable to afford rising petrol prices after the government eliminated subsidy on petroleum products early this year. This follows suggestions for supporting such families.
A cap on petrol M91 grade price will continue until the Cabinet takes a final decision, said Al Aufi.
“They (the Cabinet) need more information,” he added.
However, he declined to give details of the proposal.
Al Aufi said that removal of fuel subsidy early this year will save OMR250 million for the government this year.
The undersecretary said that the ministry has taken several initiatives to redeploy local workers who lost their jobs.
“We are trying to find job opportunities for Omanis within the oil and gas industry or outside.”
With the commissioning of expanded refining facility at Sohar refinery, the crude oil consumption within Oman will increase to 27 per cent of total production. This will result in a reduction in export of crude oil.
