Oman accident: Spike in female deaths on roads

MUSCAT: More Omani women died on the roads in the first two months of 2017 than over the same period last year, data reveals.
There was a 33.3 per cent increase in the deaths of Omani females in January and February compared to the first two months of last year, while accidents rates overall reduced.
Accidents have dropped by 26.1 percent until the end of February 2017 compared to the same period in 2016, including a drop in injuries and deaths, except in the Omani females category.
According to the monthly bulletin issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information, from the beginning of the year until the end of February 2017, 605 accidents were registered compared to 819 during the same period last year which marks a 26.1 percent decrease.
In February, 287 accidents were registered compared to January the month before with 318 and December 2016 with 426.
Injuries also came down by 12.7 percent until the end of February with 453 on record so far compared to 519 during the same period in 2016. 202 injuries were registered in February where Omanis made 141 while expatriates made up the remaining 61 injured.
Death rates have also decreased by 4.9 percent until the end of February this year with 98 deaths compared to 103 during the first two months of 2016. Omanis registered 71 deaths while expatriates lost 27 people.
The deaths of 16 Omani females were registered until the end of February 2017 compared to 12 during the same period last year.
Data also shows that 63 per cent of accidents during February occurred during day time.
