Royal Hospital publishes paper on COVID-19

Muscat: The Royal Hospital published a scientific paper that analyses the existence of a link between a particular fungus and COVID-19 infection.

A statement issued online by the Royal Hospital said, ”The scientific paper summarised analysis of a group of scientific studies that showed the existence of a link between a specific type of fungus and infection with COVID-19 among intensive care patients on the one hand and its effect on the high mortality rate on the other hand.”

The paper entitled 'Fungus related to infection with COVID-19' explained that most of the patients infected with this fungus were those who had a central intravenous line for medicines and it was removed as soon as they were diagnosed and put on broad-spectrum antibiotics.

The statement confirmed, ”The scientific paper included five cases that were diagnosed in a hospital, out of which three of them died and two survived.”

The statement pointed out, ”The paper concluded that length of stay in the hospital, surgical procedures, central vein line and broad-spectrum antibiotic use. It may result in an increased risk of infection with these fungi.”

“While the paper stressed the importance of paying attention to symptoms and warning signs that may contribute to early diagnosis, and thus starting appropriate treatment immediately in order to enhance the patient's response to treatment optimally,” the statement added.
