Muscat: Oman’s COVID-19 infection rate per million population is greater than that of the countries that have the highest number of cases around the world.
According to data from the World Health Organization, Oman’s rate of infection for every one million people stands at 9,346 cases. Although the US, Brazil, India and Russia have more people infected by COVID-19, their rates of infection for every one million people is lower.
However, in the GCC, Oman’s rate of infection per million is among the lowest. Qatar looks to have the highest rate per million in the world, at 34,829 cases. Bahrain’s rate per million is 17,521. In Kuwait, it is about 11,857 per million. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are the two countries in the region where the rate of infection per million is lower than Oman’s.
The rate of infection in Saudi Arabia is 6,138 per million, and 5,264 per million in the United Arab Emirates.
Oman’s death rate per million is also comparatively low in the region, with Kuwait having the highest death rate at 87, followed by Bahrain (57), Saudi Arabia (56), and Qatar (46). Oman’s death rate per million, according to the WHO, is 42. The UAE’s death rate per million stands at 32.
The United States is still the country with the highest number of reported cases of COVID-19, and the rate of infection per million stands at 8,832, although it does have the highest number of reported cases in the world, with 2,923,432 people confirmed to have tested COVID-19 positive.
Brazil has the second-highest number of positive COVID cases in the world. WHO data pegs it at 1,623,284 cases of infection, but its rate of infection per million is only 7,636 people. India, which is third in the world when it comes to the total number of cases reported, has so far seen 719,665 tests for COVID-19 come back positive, but it's infection rate per million is far lower, at just 521 cases.
Russia is fourth in terms of confirmed COVID-19 cases, at 694,230. However, its rate of infection per million is only about 4,757.
Among the highest rates of infection per million population, in the world, are French Guiana, an overseas colony of France, which is located in South America, and has recorded a whopping 17,317 cases per million members of its population.
Chile, which reported a staggering 15,746 cases of COVID-19 per million, is also high up on the list, although the total number of cases there is only slightly higher than 300,000.
Globally, as of 7:58am CEST (9:58am Oman time), on Wednesday, July 8, there have been a total of 11,591,595 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 537,859 deaths, reported to WHO.
