Muscat: The Court of First Instance in North Al Sharqiyah governorate recently issued a court ruling against a commercial institution on charges of violating consumer protection laws.
A statement issued online by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) said: "The administration received a complaint from a consumer against a commercial institution in the governorate, in which it was stated that the consumer had reached an agreement with the company to water-proof his home, with a guarantee of 10 years. But after only one year had passed, there was leakage of water from the ceiling. Accordingly, maintenance was done by the guarantor company. "
"After several more months passed the leak came back again, that promped the consumer to communicate again with the company that stated that the air conditioners and tubes on the roof should be removed as it was the main reason for the leakage, which was rejected by the consumer because of the high costs. In turn, the company refused to restart the repair again. "
"So the consumer was directed to present his complaint to the North Al Sharqiyah Consumer Protection Department, which took the necessary measures regarding the complaint and attempted to resolve the complaint amicably, and this was not possible. It referred the case file to the competent authorities, which decided to convict the defendant of the failure to adhere to the proper delivery of the service to the consumer and not to adhere to a guarantee of his service or return its value and required that he be punished with a financial fine totaling 500 OMR."
