ISLAMABAD: The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has surged to 27,474 in Pakistan, the health ministry of the country said on Saturday morning.
A total of 618 patients died while 7,756 recovered. So far, a total of 270,025 tests have been conducted by health authorities across the country, the official statistics showed.
The country's virus mortality rate has been determined as 2.2 percent and the recovery rate has been noted as 28.2 percent.
Punjab province has been worst hit by the disease with 10,471 positive cases followed by Sindh where 9,691 people have been tested positive so far, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces reported 4,327 and 1,876 cases respectively. A total of 609 cases were reported from the capital Islamabad, the health ministry said.
The recent surge in the positive cases has been witnessed at the time when the country announced to ease the lockdown from Saturday in most parts of the country except Sindh, where the relaxation will start on Monday, to support the poor and labor class of the society, who were deprived of earning bread.
The country's Prime Minister Imran Khan said in a recent televised address that the lockdown will be eased in several phases from Saturday, starting from the reopening of construction-related industries and small markets.
