Muscat: Oman could become only the second country in the Gulf Cooperation Council to introduce a media code of ethics.

A seminar held by Sultan Qaboos University saw journalists, media personnel, lawyers and SQU faculty members from the media department discuss a media code of ethics in the Sultanate where a draft of the code was presented.

The media code of ethics is a set of policies that a journalist or anyone working in media must follow.

Much like the United Kingdom’s journalist code of ethics, the code includes respecting privacy, confidentiality of sources and accurate reporting among other things.

The draft also includes rights of journalists in the field.

The draft was compiled by the media department at SQU and will be handed over to the Oman Journalists Association for further discussion.
