Muscat: Omani team Almouj Muscat proved themselves a force to be reckoned with as they swept to victory in EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour's second round of inshore racing. The team, entering the 730 nautical mile race around the Gulf region for the first time, won two of the four intense sprints that made up the Abu Dhabi In-Port Race series.
Held in the coral blue waters off Abu Dhabi's iconic Corniche and framed by the grand Presidential Palace and Emirates Palace Hotel, the racing saw Almouj, Muscat, under the expert leadership of French sailor Nico Lunven, dominate the nine international crews to finish the day as winners of Abu Dhabi In-Port series.
They even managed to get the better of reigning EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour (SATT) champion Sidney Gavignet and his EFG Bank Monaco crew, who came second overall.
The event also saw Team Zain, crewed by employees of the Kuwaiti telecommunications company, take third place overall in the inshore racing with a solid performance. With French sailor Cedric Pouligny at the helm, Team Zain finished third in the second race of the day then followed it up with a first place in race three. British crew Team Averda completed the Abu Dhabi In-Port Race series podium.
A special prize-giving ceremony at Emirates Palace Marina was held to celebrate the achievements of the teams. They now have precious little time to rest and recuperate before they embark on their next offshore challenge – a gruelling 160nm leg 2 from Abu Dhabi to Qatari capital Doha starting tomorrow. Lunven, skipper of Almouj, Muscat, said: “We had a great day today in Abu Dhabi, we are very happy.
“The racing was very tactical and we had a bad start to the first race but after we got it together as a team the results started to come.
“It is always good to show other teams you can be strong.
“I am very lucky because my crew is very good – they support me at the helm. They all did a fantastic job today, and we had just a little bit of luck too.
“These in-port races are very important in the grand scheme of the race because it gives teams a chance to train while on the race course.
“We have very good crew members but we don't know each other very well so we have to build a strong team, and days like today are invaluable for that.
“Now our thoughts turn to tomorrow and the longer offshore leg to Doha.”
Omani sailor and Almouj, Muscat crewman Abdullaziz Al Obidani, added: “It was great to sail in Abu Dhabi – the race area is fantastic for sailboat racing and the views are incredible too.
“Leg 2 to Doha is a really long, hard one – we did it last year so we know how tough it's going to be.
“It is really important that we go into the leg not thinking about our win today but focussed on what lies ahead.
“We are really looking forward to the rest of the race.”
Team Zain skipper Pouligny said his team of amateurs rose to the challenge of competing against some of the world's best sailors. He said: “We had a very nice day today. The legs were very short and the racing was intense, and we improved throughout the day. Our team is made up of Zain employees, some of whom have only sailed three days in their lives, so we're delighted with today's result. “Four races in a row is full on but we rose to the challenge”.
“We have no pressure on us going into the next offshore leg – we want to perform well but it's a new team and we're sailing against some of the world's best sailors. Then next leg will be the longest so far so it will be a real test for the team”.
“A 12-hour race like Leg 1 is nothing compared to the challenge of 160nm including a night at sea.”
Leg 1 from Dubai to Abu Dhabi saw the teams race 61nm in light northerly winds on Tuesday. Team Averda claimed victory in the leg, adding to the win in the Dubai In-Port Race series.
EFG Bank Monaco were just minutes behind them after a hard-fought battle with the Brits, while Team Zain scored a third on the opening leg. Leg 2 will be the biggest test yet for the nine crews as they do battle across the Persian Gulf. With winds forecast to be light – around 10 knots from the north east – it is expected the stage will take around 36 hours to complete.
Leg 1 (Dubai – Abu Dhabi) results: 1 Team Averda; 2 EFG Bank Monaco; 3 Team Zain; 4 Renaissance Services; 5 TU Delft Challenge; 6 Almouj, Muscat; 7 Team Bienne Voile; 8 Oman Airports-Al Thuraya Women’s Team; 9 Team Mangold.
