Muscat: Sur Hospital used the first new technique called ‘epidural’ on February 11, 2020, that can provide pain relief without any side effect during childbirth.

According to the Sur Hospital, “For the first time the hospital’s department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, under the supervision of anaesthesia consultant Dr Shahram, conducted the first normal birth using the ‘epidural’ technique, and a healthy child was birthed, without any side effect to the mother and the baby.”

“This technique depends on injecting analgesic in the back for pain relief without affecting the mother’s ability to move or apply pressure during childbirth. This technique can also continue to be used as an anaesthetic in case the mother needs to undergo a caesarean section. The department is seeking to adopt this technique as a safe option to relive pain during childbirth and to advance the level of health services provided to the mother and child in the maternity hall.”
