New York: The UN General Assembly held a special session for eulogy on the death of late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour at its headquarters in New York yesterday.
At the beginning of the session, Tijjani Muhammad Bande, President of the General Assembly of the UN said, “We would continue to remember late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour as a leader who made peace his mission and one who was committed to the principles and values of the United Nations.” He also called the participants for a minute of silence in memory of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed his condolences and sincere sympathy to the royal family, the government of Oman and the Omani people on the death of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour, who turned Oman into a distinct modern country. The UN Secretary General added that during his rule, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour received the respect of Omani people and the world at large.
He added that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said gave priority to cooperation and led Oman to joining the UN, the Arab League and the GCC.
He said that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour was “a messenger of peace and understanding, and during his rule, Oman opened channels of communications with the world”.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres wished His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik all success in leading Oman to further progress and prosperity, reaffirming the support of the UN for Oman in efforts for dissemination of peace and stability in the region.
In his speech, the UN Secretary General also touched on the role late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour has played in development of education and for the comprehensive development witnessed in all fields in the Sultanate of Oman.
Representatives of Togo (on behalf of Africa’s group), Brunei Darussalam (on behalf Asia and the Pacific Group), Azerbaijan ( on behalf of East Europe Group), representative of Jamaica (on behalf of Latin America and the Caribbean), Denmark (on behalf of Western Europe and other countries), the US, the host country, and the Republic of the Sudan (on behalf of the Arab countries) delivered speeches on the achievements of late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour and the role His Majesty played in development of Oman and for the vital role at the world level.
Mohammed bin Awadh Al Hassan, The Sultanate’s permanent representative to the UN expressed his thanks for the participants for their noble words.
