Hefty fines for anyone violating fluorescent lamp standards in Oman

Muscat: A Ministerial decision has imposed a fine of OMR 1,000 on persons who do not adhere to international standards adopted by Oman in the use of fluorescent lamps.

The decision was issued by Dr Ali bin Masaud Al Sunaidi the minister of Commerce and Industry. The first article of the decision says:

The following international standards related to fluorescent lamps are also to be considered as Omani standards:

1. IEC 61159 “Double capped fluorescent lamp - Safety specifications”

2. IEC 61199 “Single capped fluorescent lamp - Safety specifications”

3. IEC 62532 “Fluorescent induction lamps - Safety specifications”

4. IEC 60968 “Self ballasted fluorescent lamps for general lighting services - Safety requirements”

The second article mentions, "Institutions and companies are granted a period of 6 months from the date of the implementation of this decision to exhaust their stock of fluorescent lighting lamps that do not conform to the standards specified in the first article of this decision."

The third article goes on to state, "An administrative fine not exceeding OMR 1,000 shall be imposed on anyone who violates the provisions of this decision, and the fine shall be doubled in the event of a repeat of the violation."

The fourth article in the decision says, "This decision shall be published in the Official Gazette and shall be enforced from the day following the date of its publication.”
