#Oman Pride: Training youth to become environment ambassadors in Oman

Muscat: Oman’s next generation is being trained and educated to become environmental ambassadors of the future.
The Environment Society of Oman (ESO), in collaboration with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), continues to spread awareness about sustainable practices through a campaign designed to inspire the next generation to be responsible environmental stewards.
Started in 2016, the programme aims to cover more than 100 middle schools in several governorates, empowering thousands of students aged between 11 and 14 years by imparting them knowledge about conservation techniques, sustainable practices, climate change and the importance of biodiversity.
The 2016 agenda covered the themes of ‘Energy Saving’ and ‘Oman’s Biodiversity,’ to be followed in 2017 with ‘Ecological Footprint’ and ‘Green Schools.’
The ESO will also be hosting its fourth ‘Eco Summer’ programme in July 2017, engaging children in environment-themed games, art and activities. With the help of volunteers, the ESO’s Education Programme will feature highly interactive presentations, games, class discussions, field trips and competitions.
Jawaher Al Ghafri, Education Coordinator at the ESO, said, “Educating our children on the importance of protecting their environment empowers them to play an integral role in making our schools, communities and planet a healthier place for us all.
Great opportunity
“The Education Programme is a great opportunity for students across the Sultanate to learn about the natural environment and how best to preserve it. Through this initiative and many others, we are equipping the future of Oman to be leaders in sustainability.”
Suleiman bin Mohammed al Mantheri, PDO’s External Affairs and Communications Manager, said, “We are proud of our Social Investment Programme that caters to local communities and the society at large. We are also pleased to work with the ESO in bringing environmental education to children throughout the Sultanate.”
The Environment Society of Oman has been working with educational institutions at different levels to inspire students to adopt environmentally-sustainable lifestyles.
Among its many initiatives are the Inter-College Public Speaking Competition (ICPSC), College Eco Clubs, as well as dedicated community outreach visits throughout the Sultanate.
