Hepatitis A vaccination encouraged by Health Ministry in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Health called on parents to ensure vaccination of their children on time to protect them from infectious diseases stating that this is the responsibility of parents and the right of the child.

A statement issued by the Ministry said, “The Hepatitis vaccine “A” is an effective method that protects against Hepatitis “A” disease. Therefore, the vaccine was included in the schedule of basic child immunisations for children born on January 1, 2019 and later, in two doses as follows: the first dose at the age of 13 months and the second dose upon completion of two years of age.”

The Ministry added, “The vaccine is safe, effective and is recommended by international health organisations. If there are any side effects, it will be simple as: high temperature or pain and redness at the site of administration of the vaccine. If any side effects appear after vaccination or there is a slight swelling in the place of the injection, please contact the nearest health institution."

"Multiple types of hepatitis “A” virus may affect the liver's ability to perform its functions or cause liver failure. Symptoms of the disease are fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, anorexia, flatulence and vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, Yellow Fever and Jaundice.”

Methods of transmission of the disease are by food or drink, especially water contaminated with faeces that carry the disease and sharing the personal tools of the affected patient. Some seafood are a source too, such as uncooked oysters ”

The methods of prevention include not having contact with the affected patient for at least a week from the onset of symptoms, personal hygiene, general hygiene and hand hygiene, providing safe drinking water and proper disposal of wastewater, avoid eating uncooked fish like oysters and washing of fruits and vegetables well before eating them.
