Massive wild tree planting initiative launched in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Environment & Climate Affairs (MECA) launched a national initiative to plant ten million wild trees under the patronage of His Excellency Mohammed bin Salim Al Tobi, the Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, as part of the celebration of the Omani Environment Day, which falls on January 8 of each year.

According to MECA, “The initiative was adopted by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to emphasize the importance of preserving wild plants, increasing green areas and combating desertification.”

Mohammed Al Tobi, the Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs said in a statement, “Preserving biological diversity and protecting wildlife is everyone's responsibility, and an obligation of every individual, whether a citizen or a resident of the Sultanate.”

“The national initiative for planting 10 million Omani wild trees came after achieving successes in the trees initiative, and it embodies the partnership and cooperation between the Ministry and the private sector to preserve the environment and achieve sustainable development," he added.

Al-Tobi thanked PDO for adopting the initiative through its supportive responsibility for the environmental field and social responsibility in partnership with the Ministry.

Engineer Abdul Amir Al Ajmi, CEO of Foreign Affairs and Added Value in PDO said in a statement, “Cultivating one acre of forest, which is close to the size of a football field, reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 2.5 tons per year.”

“This initiative is part of the company's plan to achieve carbon balance and efforts to improve sustainability that include a number of projects to reduce carbon emissions from the company's operational activities,” he added.
