Japanese man spends nearly $2 million on a 276kg fish

Tokyo: A tuna fish weighing 267 kilograms was sold in Japan for $1.8 million (193.2 million Yen), as part of an auction held at the Tokyo Fish Market to mark the start of the New Year.

According to the Oman News Agency, “The Bluefin tuna, weighing 276 kg, with each kilogram valued at 700,000 Yen, was sold at Toyosu Fish Market in the Japanese capital. This tuna was caught in Oma on the northern tip of Honshu Island, the largest island in Japan. This is one of the best fishing areas for tuna. This is the second highest price paid for a single tuna in Japan since the authorities began to set records in 1999.”

ONA said that the Japanese are among the world’s biggest consumers in the world of bluefin tuna. Overfishing of this species by the Japanese has prompted worldwide criticism.
