216 illegal fishermen hooked in clampdown in Oman

Muscat: Authorities arrested 216 expatriate fishermen for violating the labour law in Masirah Island.
Of the arrested, 88 were found to be originally registered under sponsors outside the wilayat while 22 were working with expired labour cards.
Salim Al Badi, Director of Labour Welfare at the Ministry of Manpower said that this drive came to “protect local workforce from illegal competition”.
Al Badi stressed that the ministry will take action against the violators like imposing fines, deporting them and ban them from entering the country again.
He praised the “great cooperation” by local citizens during the campaign and their awareness of the importance of maintaining the security of the homeland and its resources.
