40% Omanis exercise their voting rights in Municipal Councils elections

Muscat: Around 40 per cent of the total registered voters in Oman voted on Sunday for the Municipal Councils elections.
At least 200,000 Omanis took a leave on the elections day to cast their votes at 107 polling stations across the country.
Figures showed that 63.2 per cent of the voters were males while 36.8 per cent were females.
The data were released at a press conference yesterday.
Eng. Khalid bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Head of the Main Committee of the Municipal Councils’ 2nd Term Election, said 729 computers were used at the polling stations. He said he was “satisfied” with the voting percentage.
The total number of people registered in the electronic system stood at 549,048, according to Al Busaidi.
Seven females were elected this year, two in North Al Batinah, two in Al Buraimi, two in Muscat and one in South Al Batinah governorates.
This means that 32 per cent of total female candidates have won.
Al Busaidi also revealed that of the total 202 elected members, 143 are new.
