National University hosts Oman Pharmaceutical Conference 2019

Muscat: The Oman Pharmaceutical Conference 2019 was organised by the College of Pharmacy, National University of Science and Technology on 3rd and 4th December, 2019 at the college campus in Muscat with the theme “Empowering Pharmacists in Healthcare and Medication Safety”.

The conference was inaugurated under the auspices of His Excellency Dr. Hilal Ali Al Hinai, Secretary General, The Research Council of Oman.

He released the conference proceedings and honored the speakers and sponsors for the event. Dr. Salim Khamis Al Araimi, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost, NU and chair of the organising committee felicitated chief guest Mr. Mohiuddin Mohamed Ali, Director, NU who was also present at the event.

The keynote address was given by Dr. Suresh Madhavan, Dean and Professor, System College of Pharmacy, University of North Texas Health Science Centre, Texas, USA. He spoke on the topic 'Empowering Pharmacists for Innovative Roles in Healthcare and Medication Safety in Oman'.

Dr. Mohammed Hamdan Al Rubai`e,Director General of Pharmaceutical Affairs and Drug Control, MOH, Sultanate of Oman chaired the session. Dr. Suresh Madhavan highlighted how a pharmacist can play an important role in medication safety.

The inaugural session was attended by the officials from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Higher Education, WHO, Pharma industry, professionals, students, and print visual media. Dr. Jayasekhar P Nair, Acting Dean, College of Pharmacy proposed a vote of thanks. Later His Excellency inaugurated the pharma exhibition.

The two-day event accredited by the Oman Medical Specialty Board was attended by more than 250 delegates including pharmacists, clinical pharmacists, students and other healthcare professionals from Oman and outside.

The conference provided a variety of events including plenary lectures, workshops, panel discussions, pharma exhibition and poster presentations highlighting research in the field of pharmacy. Several pharmaceutical establishments in Oman supported the conference.

The sessions started with a lecture on medication safety culture in the middle East by Dr. Thamer Al Shammari, Medication Safety Research Chair, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. His lecture was followed by Dr. M. Ramesh, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysore, India who spoke on “Medication Without Harm – A Global Patient Safety Challenge”.

The session on Pharma co-vigilance was chaired by Dr. Saleh Al Khusaiby, Strategic Health Advisor, NU. The speakers were Ph. Husain Al Ramimmy, Director of Pharma co-vigilance, DGPA &DC, MoH, Oman and Dr. Sathvik B.Sridhar.

The session on “Patient safety” was chaired by Dr.Amna Al Hashar, Deputy HoD, Pharmacy Department, SQUH, Sultanate of Oman.

The other topics of interest in drug discovery ranged from 'Minor Components of Major crops with biological efficacy and therapeutic potential' presented by Dr. Sarang Bani, Senior Advisor R&D, Sami labs ltd, Bangalore, India and 'Potential of Omani plant products in the management of Neuro-degenerative diseases' by Dr. Shah Alam Khan, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, College of Pharmacy, NU, Muscat.

The topics included patient counseling, enhancing pharmacist role in patient-centered collaborative care, ensuring safe and quality radio-pharmaceutical use in nuclear medicine and the implementation of clinical pharmacy service in the Psychiatric Hospital in Oman.

The students, working pharmacists and scientists shared their research findings in the form of poster presentations.
