#OmanPride: A rare hearing surgery transforms Omani’s life

Muscat: Sitting with his children, listening to them reading bedtime stories, Sanad Jaber Al Soli looks like any other loving father about to tuck his children into bed.
But this father-of-three only heard the voices of his children for the first time two weeks ago, thanks to an Omani medical team and a breakthrough procedure.
A groundbreaking operation in Oman has enabled the 32-year-old father of three to hear his children - and his parents and friends - for the first time in his life.
Two weeks ago, Sanad had a life-changing implant at Al Nahda Hospital to treat his hearing loss.
When the procedure was completed, Sanad, from Al Suwaiq, was stunned.
“I was very happy to hear my children’s voices,” said the father of three.
“As I left the hospital I heard noises from the street, the people and the cars. It was all very clear to me for the first time,” Al Soli said.
He also heard the voices of his mother and father for the very first time.

“My mum and dad’s voices are the most beautiful to me and also the voices of my children Yaseen, Elias and Jaber,” he said.
Despite his challenges, Sanad has learned to drive a car and he is now searching for a job.
“Thanks to God I can now live like any normal person and have conversations easily with my family and friends,” Al Soli said, while thanking the medical team which performed the surgery.
Headed by Dr Ammar bin Mohsen Al Lawati, the team performed a Bonebridge implant to treat Al Soli’s hearing loss two weeks ago. The Bonebridge is the world’s first active bone conduction implant system. It creates a bone bridge to enable hearing.
“The patient had previously undergone surgery to open the canal, but the problem still existed, due to a defect in the middle ear, where the ossicles were not in their intended position,” the hospital reported.
Successful surgery
Al Lawati, ENT Senior Consultant at the hospital, performed the successful surgery with participation of Dr. Yousef Al Saidi, Dr. Subrandra Kumar, and Dr. Jagdish, allowing for the first time the patient to hear sounds.
“After studying the patient’s history and carrying out all the necessary examinations, it was apparent to us that performing an operation to implant the bone conduction implant was the most suitable solution for him. The use of hearing aids would have been of no value given the absence of the canals required for the sound to pass”, Dr. Ammar Al Lawati said.
Al Lawati added: “I would like to commend the tireless efforts of the surgical team in achieving this outstanding success for Al Nahda Hospital”.
