Muscat: Several areas in the Sultanate will witness sporadic rainfall — as an indirect effect of Cyclone Kyarr — Oman’s meteorology department said.

In view of this, Oman’s National Ferries Company announced that they will suspend services on the Shannah-Masirah route from Tuesday until further notice.

A statement from NFC said, “In view of the developing Cyclonic Storm Kyarr in the Arabian Sea and associated adverse weather conditions, NFC temporarily suspends trips along Shannah-Masirah route. The trips suspension is for passengers’ safety and comfort, shall take effect this Tuesday, 29th October.”

The National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre’s (NMHEWC) analysis indicates that “KYARR” over centre Arabian Sea is located at longitude 65.2°E and latitude 18.2°N.

The tropical storm has an estimated surface wind speed around the centre between 115 to 125 knots.

The tropical cyclone centre is about 760 km away from the nearest point of the Sultanate’s coast (Ras Madrakah).

NMHEWC’s latest analysis indicates chances of Kyarr’s continuous movement towards west to north west, towards the Sultanate’s coasts during the coming 48 hours, with a gradual decline in classification. After that, the movement will be southwesterly parallel to the coasts of South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates.

The centre of the tropical cyclone will be as close as 200 km away from Oman’s coasts with no chances of crossing land.

It is also expected that the indirect effects of the tropical cyclone will begin by Tuesday night in a form of cloud advection occasionally associated with thundershower and fresh winds over South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates.

Rough sea condition is expected along the coasts of South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates with maximum wave height ranging between four to six meters with chances of seawater inundation over low lying coastal areas while it will be moderate to rough sea (two to three metres) along Oman’s sea coasts.
