New York: Donald Trump has been elected the 45th President of the United States of America.
Democrat hopeful Hillary Clinton called Trump to concede the contest after the Republican nominee won key states like Florida and Ohio.
It had been a close-run contest during the early count but as the votes came in the map of the USA progressively started to turn a Republican red.
His victory confounded pollsters and sent shockwaves through global financial markets. The dollar has already fallen by around 5per cent and investors are seeking “safe havens” to store their funds, according to financial experts.
Trump thanked Clinton for her ‘hard-fought” campaign and pledged to work for “all Americans” in his speech to supporters.
“Ours was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement made up of millions of hard working men and women,” he told supporters, adding: “Every single American will have the opportunity to realize his or her fullest potential.”
The Republican with no previous experience in politics said it was time to “get together and bind the wounds of division”, while pledging to fix inner cities and rebuild the country’s infrastructure.
He added: “We will embark on a project of national growth and renewal.”
Trump added: “The forgotten men and women of this nation will be forgotten no longer.”
