39% fall in road accidents in Oman

Muscat: There has been a 38.8 per cent fall in the number of road accidents at 3,062 till the end of September 2016 compared to 5,007 in the same period last year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) based on data from the ROP.
The accidents resulted in 508 deaths and 2,113 injuries this year compared to 502 deaths and 2,879 injuries last year, according to NCSI.
Of the total deaths, 321 were Omanis which included 267 males and 54 females. Among the 187 expats who died, 161 were males and 26 females. Of the total number of injured, 1,584 were Omanis including 1,189 males and 395 females. Among the 529 expats who were injured, 454 were males and 75 females.
The number of new vehicles registered this year was 77,159 compared to 83,103 during the same period of 2015, a decline of 7.2 per cent.
The number of private vehicles registered was 54,758 compared to 56,836 in 2015, a decline of 3.7 per cent.
Registration of taxis decreased by 13.2 per cent – 499 in 2016 compared to 575 in 2015. Registrations of leasing vehicles also decreased by 27 per cent – 2,716 in 2016 compared to 3,723 in 2015. There was a 25.8 per cent fall in the registration of motorbikes too at 524 compared to 706 in 2015.
Registration of new vehicles of diplomats saw 8.9 per cent increase to touch 61, registration of tractors saw a 23.9 per cent fall while registration of driving school vehicles increased by 10.5 per cent.
