Eyeliner hacks for beginners

A smudge here, a stray streak there, and the battle to achieve symmetry – the struggles with eyeliners are real and it happens to the best of us. Applying eyeliner is an art in itself, but if you don’t have the patience to master it, here are six hacks that will ease the eyeliner struggle.

1 Pick your stick
Start with the kind of eyeliner that you’re most comfortable with, not what your expert makeup artist suggested. Pencil eyeliners don’t always give the deepest colours, but it’s easier to draw and clean up. If you have steady hands, by all means, try a gel or liquid liner.
2 Make the most of the mess
So you’ve tried a hundred times to achieve a smooth line, but it just won’t happen. Well, this hack lets you go ahead and draw a messy line. The trick is to clean up later. Once you’ve drawn the line (to the best of your ability), use a Q-stick dipped in a little petroleum jelly to clean up and smooth the line. Just make sure you’ve not got too much jelly, or you’ll be left with ugly clumps on your lid.
3 Dot or dash
Remember, as kids we would connect the dots to get that perfect picture. The same technique can be applied when you want to get that perfect line. Start with drawing dots or small dashes along the lid and simply join it later. This works great for liquid liners.
4 Rule of the middle
This tip actually makes a lot of sense. Aiming to achieve a continuous line starting from one end right to the other is hard, not to mention, intimidating. Instead, start from the middle and draw to the outer corner, and then repeat from the middle to the inner corner. The shorter lines will definitely ease the pressure.
5 Smudge it
For a quick fix for lines that aren’t as smooth as you’d want them to be, go for the smoky look. Smudge your pencil liner, add some dark eye shadow, and you’ll achieve the evergreen smoky look. Maybe not as perfect as your favourite celebrity, but it’s the quickest go-to cover-up.
6 Tightline
You don’t always have to do it the traditional way. Try using the eyeliner only on your upper waterline. It’ll make it look more natural. Of course, you would want to ensure the liner is waterproof, so all the effort doesn’t go in vain if you tear a little.
