Alawi leads Oman’s delegation to the United Nations

Muscat: Oman’s participation in the 74th United Nations General Assembly included meetings of Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, the Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, with world leaders.

Bin Alawi chaired GCC discussion meetings with both the Pakistani and Indian Foreign Ministers, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read: “A discussion session was held at the Sultanate’s permanent mission to the United Nations between the GCC countries, chaired by bin Alawi and between Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan.”

Another statement by MoFA read: “A discussion session was held at the Sultanate’s permanent mission to the UN between the GCC countries, chaired by bin Alawi and beween Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs of India.”

During a meeting between Alawi and Niels Annen, the German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Annen said: “We are grateful to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and as we work with Oman on regional and humanitarian issues. We spoke about the tensions in the region.”

“Oman is important becuase of its geographical location but also due to the trust everyone puts in it,” he added, according to MOFA.

His Excellency also met with Asma Mohamed Abdalla, the Minister of Foreign affairs of Sudan, where “His Excellency expressed Oman’s welcoming of the peaceful political agreement which was struck in Sudan, and he discussed with the foreign minister in Sudan the bilateral relations and cooperation between the two brotherly countries,” according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His Excellency also spoke once again about Oman’s Support for an independent Palestinian country when he met with President Mahmood Abbas. During during this meeting, he “reafiirmed to the president Oman’s steady position of support for the establishment of a Palestinian country which has a capital in Eastern al Quds (East Jerusalam).”

Bin Alawi also met with David schenker, the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and Tim Lenderking, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arabian Gulf Affairs, of the US Department of State.

The meeting involved “Discussions of the efforts to push forward for peace in Yemen. It also affirmed Oman’s support of any international effort that can bring peace and stability to Yemen.”

The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen expressed his admiration of Oman’s work to push forward for peace in Yemen.The UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths has said in an interview ‘Oman has a special role to play, and when I meet Oman’ s Minister of Foreign Affairs, I am looking for advice that will allow me to do my job better.’

“Oman is a country with a special geographic placement, and it borders Yemen and has a long history of good relations and contact with everyone. Because of this, Oman plays a vital role. Oman is trusted and has no motive other than ensuring peace and stability in the region,” Griffiths added, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Oman also signed an agreement with Kenya for mutual cooperation. According to MOFA, “Oman’s government and the Republic of Kenya have signed at the United Nations in New York have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Mutual Cooperation in different fields. The agreement was signed by His Excellency Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, as well as Monica Juma, the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Kenya.”

Bin Alawi also held a meeting with Ignazio Cassis, the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, where they discussed “coordinating shared efforts to contain crises on the basis of international law and references.”

The Gulf Cooperation Council, including Oman, also recently met with Michael R. Pompeo, the Secretary of State of the United States, where the participants discussed peace and prosperity.

A statement by the United States Department of State read: “The Secretary thanked the foreign ministers for their partnership with the United States and emphasized the importance of regional coordination to confront the region’s challenges, including through multilateral initiatives such as the International Maritime Security Construct and the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA).”
