Muscat: Six-hitters Muhammed Naseem Khushi and Mehran Khan returned to the team as Oman Cricket announced its squad for the 14-team ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 which will be held in UAE from October 18 to November 2 a preparatory five-nation T20 tournament it will host prior to the ICC event.
Group A comprises Scotland, Netherlands, PNG, Namibia, Singapore, Kenya and Bermuda while Group B has UAE, Ireland, Oman, Hong Kong, Canada, Jersey and Nigeria.
Top team from each group will move to the semi-final of the tournament, securing direct qualification to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, with three more teams from each group featuring in qualification play-offs to determine the other four qualifiers.
The six qualifying teams will then join Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies in the main ICC Tournament in Australia next year.
Oman has been preparing hard for the tournament under the watchful eyes of head coach Dulip Mendis and has picked a strong side packed with plenty of impact players. Captain Zeeshan Maqsood will be assisted by vice-captain Aqib Ilyas for both the assignments. Off-spinner Jay Odedara is part of the squad touring UAE but has been placed among reserves for the five-nation home series.
