Muscat: An academician from the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has won the King Abdullah II Award for presenting a system to utilise solar energy for removing water from sludge in a semi-continuous mode.
Dr. Hasan Abdellatif Hasan, the award-winning associate professor from the Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering at SQU, has proved the technical feasibility of a solar drying system that helps evaporate water.
The requirements for wastewater treatment worldwide are becoming more complex. Additionally, the produced sewage sludge needs to be treated with adequate techniques, keeping in mind the legal requirements on sludge reuse or disposal.
In all, 83 participants from 13 Arab countries applied for the award. 29 applied in the field of literature and art, 19 in the field of science and 35 in the field of Arab cities.
Hasan shared the award for innovation in the field of applied research to improve energy equipment with Auni Atoum and Fihmi Abul Rub.
