Muscat: Three Omani graduation projects have beaten 125 contenders to take prizes of OMR12,000 in a prestigious competition.
The Upgrade programme competition, designed to transform 4th Industrial Revolution graduation projects into start-ups to be supported and nurtured to benefit Oman, is in its third edition.
The three winning projects, which were announced on September 2, were “Renewable ‘Energy Management System for a Smart City’ (REMS ), prepared by a team from SQU, ‘Development of E-Voting System Based on Blockchain Technology’, from the Middle East College, and ‘Internet of Things Water Quality Monitoring and Notification System for Red Tide’, also from Middle East College,” according to a statement by The Research Council.

Each of the winning teams will receive financial support of OMR12,000, a comprehensive incubation, support and development program and training on start-ups at a company outside of the Sultanate.
Asila Al Zeidi, Strategic Programme Specialist at the Communications and Information Technology sector at TRC, said, “We thank the programme's administrators who spared no effort in bringing this competition to as many students as possible.
“The numbers show that the programme has grown noticeably during the third edition, which shows how important it is in academia,” she added.
Laila Al Wahaibi, CSR Manager at Omantel, said, “We are delighted to celebrate the conclusion of the third cycle of ‘Upgrade’ and announce the three winning teams for this year.

“The programme brings opportunities to the winners and allows them to build companies that can support Oman in the path of entrepreneurship,” she added.
A total of 125 graduation projects applied for this year’s program from 17 academic institutions, all of which are based in Oman except for one, and the awarding ceremony was hosted by HE Talal Al Rahbi, Deputy Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Planning.
