Heavy rain expected to lash Oman by next week

Muscat: Heavy to medium rain is expected to lash the country starting from next week, according to weather experts.

Abdullah Al Khoudori, a weather expert, said: “Yes, there are some indicators of the formation of a tropical storm by the end of this week. However for a long period of time and the lack of agreement over the models, it remains variable. We are constantly following the changes in weather.”

Moreover, the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) disclosed that there would be continued rain over parts of the Hajar mountains.

“Most of the Sultanate will see mainly clear skies, with chances of convective cloud development and isolated rain, and occasional thundershowers over the Hajar mountains during the afternoon. There are chances of late night to early morning low-level clouds or fog patches over parts of the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman,” a PACA statement read.

However, PACA is yet to confirm whether the rest of the Sultanate would witness heavy rain.

The last time Oman saw heavy rain was during the Khareef season, however it only affected the Dhofar region. Shortly before the Khareef, parts of Dhofar had witnessed a torrential downpour with cyclone Mekunu making landfall near Salalah on May 25.
