Oman celebrates World Tourism Day

Muscat: With the participation of government and private sector organisations and the local community, the Ministry of Tourism celebrated the World Tourism Day (WTD) yesterday, which is entitled “Tourism for All”.
Sayyid Adel bin Al Mardas Al Busaidi, Tourist Affairs Adviser at the Ministry of Tourism sponsored the celebration.
Haitham bin Mohammed Al Ghassani, Assistant Director-General for Internal Tourism Promotion at the Ministry of Tourism said in his speech that the aim of this annual celebration is to raise awareness in the local and international community on the importance of tourism as travel has become a big part in the lives of many, adding that and it is estimated that 15 per cent of the general population suffer from different types of disability, which means they are unable perhaps to travel and enjoy the privilege of learning about other cultures, so tourism should be available to all.
The ceremony contained many activities, including a lecture presented by the National Museum on the facilities provided by the museum to serve people with special needs. Mark Tourism Company made a presentation on its efforts to attract people with special needs from the British market.
Budoor Al Salhi presented her experience in the field of mountaineering. The Ministry of Education presented some tourist films produced by some of the school students. A short drama was presented by Al Musanah College of Technology on the disadvantages of camping in places not intended for camping.
