Muscat: Barakat Al Harthi led the Omani atheletes challenge while the Sultanate’s handball and volleyball continued with their winning run in the fifth Asian Beach Games in the Vietnamese city of Danang on Monday.
According to information received here, Barakat stormed into the final of the men’s 60m race along with Yahya Al Noufli in the same event while Mazoon Al Alawi entered the final of the women’s 60m race.
In the men’s 60m race, Omani star Barakat topped the Round 1 Heat 1 in a time of 6.96 seconds to finish ahead of Iran’s Reza Ghasemi (6.97) and Bandit Chuangchai (7.09) of Thailand.
In the Heat 2, Yahya clocked 7.11 seconds to finish second behind China’s Xinyue Pau (7.10) of China and head of Qatar’s Eid Abdullah Al Kuwari (7.18).
In the women’s 60m competition, Mazoon Al Alawi was the quickest in the Round 1 Heat 1 clocking 7.90 seconds. Vietnam’s Tu Ching Le (7.77) and Hong Kong’s On Ki Lam (7.93) finished second and third respectively.
Both the men’s and women’s 60m final races will take place on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Oman handball team recorded their second successive victory when they defeated Japan 26-14, 25-7 in a Group B match.
Said Al Hassani was the top scorer for Oman with nine goals while Nasr Al Tamtami and Asaad Al Hasani scored eight and five goals respectively.
Oman, who after two victories head the group with ahead of Vietnam on better goal average of 48 against 28, play Afghanistan on Tuesday.
In the beach volleyball, both Omani teams scored their second successive victories.
The duo of Badr Al Subhi and Nooh Al Jalboobi defeated Afghanistan’s Sediqi and Zadan 21-14, 21-12 in a Pool H match while the team of Haitham Al Shuraiqi and Ahmed Al Hosni accounted for East Timor’s Ricardo and Ajor in a 21-3, 21-9 victory.
