Muscat: In an unprecedented surgical achievement, surgeons at the Cardiac Catheter Department of the Royal Hospital’s National Heart Centre performed a catheter operation under local anesthesia while working in real time collaboration with doctors in Italy through live conferencing.
Doctors at the Total Occlusion & Bifurcation Interventions (TOBI) Conference in Rome, Italy were interacting with the doctors at the Royal Hospital throughout the surgery.
A specialised medical team performed the operation under the supervision of Dr Mohammed Al Riyami, senior consultant at the Centre.
Dr Al Riyami pointed out that TOBI is an international conference held annually in Rome, the capital of Italy and attended by a group of specialists from different specializations.
In addition, for the first time, the operation was transmitted live from the National Heart Centre to the TOBI conference in Italy which brought together around 1,500 doctors from Europe, North Africa and Middle East.
He also added that the operation was carried within a time span of 45-minutes and latest technologies were used.
Broadcast it live
The Sultanate, represented by the National Heart Centre was nominated to perform this operation and to broadcast it live to the TOBI conference.
This came after the visit of Prof. Rime Raimer. The operation could be conducted because advanced equipment and highly efficient medical professionals were available at the Centre.
Dr. Mohammed said the successful operation was praised by all those participating in the conference.
