Midwife in Liberia has 800 children named after her

Monrovia: A midwife in Liberia has more than 800 children named in her honour, thanks to her invaluable commitment to helping women give birth.
Alice Sumo has helped so many families give birth to baby boys and girls in the African country, and the thankful parents often name their newborns after her.

On the occasion of World Humanitarian Day 2019, the United Nation’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in collaboration with Save the Children, profiled Alice and brought some of the children named after her to come meet her.

“I’ve been working as a midwife for nearly three decades here in Liberia,” said the original Alice Sumo. “I have cared for the mothers and babies with love and affection. Sometimes, parents here have a special way of thanking me. And that is why there are hundreds of children around here called Alice, named after me. There are over 800 Alices everywhere you go.”

The UN brought back several of the children named Alice to come meet her on World Humanitarian Day, and they did not hesitate to shower her with their love, and show her how much her care and affection meant to them, as she often travelled hundreds of kilometres over bumpy dirt roads to deliver these children.
“Seeing so many Alices made me happy and so proud of the legacy I am leaving behind,” said Alice Sumo, as she joined in the ‘my name is Alice’ song.
