Oman and Japan call for de-escalation of tensions in the region

Muscat: Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi, Foreign Minister of Oman. and his Japanese counterpart, Toshimitsu Motegi emphasised the importance of reaching a final agreement and a political solution that leads to the de-escalation of tensions in the region during a press conference in Muscat.

They also highlighted the need to intensify international efforts to ensure the freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law, guaranteeing the seamless flow of maritime traffic and energy supplies.

Sayyid Badr said: "Economic relations represent a crucial pillar of the partnership between the two countries. We welcome the growing interest and participation of Japanese companies in the Sultanate of Oman, particularly in the sectors of energy, renewables and low-carbon technologies, logistics, and infrastructure."

“The Sultanate of Oman looks forward to reaching a positive outcome regarding the Free Trade Agreement discussions between Japan and the GCC countries. Concluding such an agreement would contribute to enhancing bilateral trade, investment, and supply chain security, thereby achieving mutual benefits for the peoples of both countries,” he added. 

Sayyid Badr further said: "The Sultanate of Oman is steadfast in its commitment to maritime security and international law, and rejects further escalation or conflict. Achieving sustainable security in the Strait of Hormuz requires establishing lasting peace in the region through restraint, diplomacy, and continuous engagement to address the underlying causes of instability, including policies of exclusion and non-compliance with international law.”

“The Sultanate of Oman is determined to continue working with Japan and all international partners to support dialogue, justice, and peaceful solutions. Partnerships based on trust, realism, and diplomacy are gaining increasing importance amid the uncertainty currently witnessed by the region and the world,” he further added. 

The Japanese Foreign Minister stated that Japan and the Sultanate of Oman are working to enhance cooperation across a wide range of fields. 

He also expressed his country's appreciation to the Sultanate of Oman for its stable and long-term supplies of crude oil and liquefied natural gas. 

He affirmed the determination of both countries to bolster cooperation in the field of clean energy, including the development of hydrogen and ammonia. 

“Japan is currently preparing a comprehensive cooperation plan to enhance economic resilience and energy security in light of the current situation in the Middle East,” he further said. 

He added: "As the situation concerning Iran reaches a critical stage, I look forward to having candid discussions toward de-escalating the situation as soon as possible and ensuring the freedom of navigation in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb.”
