India opens nuclear sector to proven foreign technology

India has proposed a tightly regulated framework allowing private and foreign players to participate in nuclear power generation, potentially giving international reactor makers access to one of the world's fastest-growing energy markets.

Under draft rules released on August 14, foreign reactor technologies with proven operating records overseas could be considered for deployment in India. However, projects would remain subject to extensive safety assessments, with regulators empowered to halt development at critical stages.

The move follows India's broader effort to expand nuclear capacity and attract private capital and technology. India has set an ambitious long-term goal of significantly increasing nuclear generation as it seeks reliable, low-carbon electricity to support economic growth.

The policy could create opportunities for major international reactor suppliers while maintaining India's regulatory control over nuclear facilities, safety and operations.
