Football fever grips Oman ahead of FIFA World Cup final

MUSCAT: Football fever is sweeping across Oman as malls, hotels, restaurants and cinemas gear up for Sunday night’s FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Spain and Argentina in New York. The match kicks off at 11pm, Oman time.

From giant screens and themed menus to special promotions and extended seating, venues across the Sultanate are gearing up to welcome thousands of football fans eager to witness the biggest match in world football.

Spain’s Ambassador to Oman, F. Javier de Istúriz, expressed his excitement ahead of the final. “Reaching the final is already a great achievement for us. Football is a sport that unites people, and in that spirit, I hope fans everywhere enjoy a memorable match,” he said.

Popular venues including Sheraton Oman, Mall of Oman, Oman Avenues Mall, VOX Cinemas, Crowne Plaza Muscat, Kempinski Muscat and Al Falaj Hotel in Ruwi are all expecting capacity crowds, with many reporting  that reservations are filling up rapidly.

Rejin Thomas, Hotel Manager at Sheraton Oman, said the hotel’s Hive Lounge is fully prepared for the occasion.

“Gather your friends and family and enjoy the World Cup final live at Hive Lounge. Catch every moment on the big screen while enjoying exciting offers and your favourite bites.

“Whether you’re cheering for Argentina or Spain, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, Hive Lounge is the perfect place to watch, relax and celebrate together.”

Beachfront venues are also joining the celebrations. Restaurants and cafes along Qurum Beach will broadcast the match on large indoor and outdoor screens, giving football fans the opportunity to enjoy the final in a lively seaside setting.

Restaurant operators say the World Cup has brought together football enthusiasts from across Oman, with supporters of both finalists, as well as neutral fans, expected to watch the match side by side.

“We’ve seen tremendous demand throughout the tournament, but the final is on another level,” Thomas added. “Tables have been booked days in advance, and we expect a full house, with fans proudly wearing their national colours. The atmosphere is going to be electric.”

Many venues have introduced themed food platters, match-night promotions and interactive activities, while decorating their interiors with national flags and football-inspired displays to recreate the excitement of an international fan zone.

Hospitality operators say the month-long tournament has provided a significant boost to evening business, with residents and visitors increasingly opting for venues that combine premium viewing experiences with food, entertainment and a vibrant atmosphere.

The excitement follows weeks of memorable football that has captivated fans across Oman. Social media has been buzzing with match predictions, celebrations and photos from viewing parties, while restaurants and sports lounges have reported a sharp increase in footfall since the knockout stages.

As Spain bid for another World Cup title and Argentina seek to reclaim football’s biggest prize, Oman is set for one of its busiest sporting nights of the year, with thousands of fans expected to gather across the country to witness the crowning of the 2026 FIFA World Cup champions.

“And now,” Ambassador F. Javier de Istúriz said, “may the best team win.”
