Strong Oman contingent departs for Doha to take part in fourth GCC Games

MUSCAT: Oman’s national teams left for Doha on Saturday ahead of the fourth GCC Games. The Sultanate is set to compete in 11 sports during the regional event running from May 11 to 22 in Qatar.

The first batch of Omani teams to reach Doha included aquatics, taekwondo, table tennis, women’s 3x3 basketball and bowling, while the official delegation of the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) will arrive on the opening day.

More than 1,074 athletes from GCC countries will compete in 17 sports at the Games, one of the region’s biggest multi-sport events.

Oman will field teams in aquatics, taekwondo, table tennis, fencing, karate, shooting, athletics, 3x3 basketball, snooker, volleyball and bowling as it looks to improve on its 32-medal haul achieved at the previous edition in Kuwait in 2022.

The OOC has completed all administrative and technical preparations in coordination with the national sports federations to ensure the teams are fully prepared for the competition. Oman’s aquatics team includes Mishal Al Kalbani, Mohammed Al Wahaibi and Humaid Al Hassani, while the taekwondo squad features Nibras Al Touqi, Shabib Al Wahaibi, Omar Al Sinani, Mohammed Al Hajri, Omaima Al Hinai and Fida Al Barwani.

The table tennis team comprises Ahmed Al Riyami, Bilal Al Rashdi and Muhannad Al Balushi. The women’s 3x3 basketball squad includes Shams Al Khonji, Fatima Al Numani, Rubi Al Kalbani and Reem Al Shirawi, while Hassan Al Kharousi and Juma Al Habsi will represent Oman in bowling.

Competitions begin on May 12 with swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, bowling and 3x3 basketball among the opening events. Athletics will start on May 14, volleyball on May 16, and karate on May 21.
