Duqm: The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (Sezad ) announced noteworthy progress in Phase I and Phase II of the dualisation project of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road (National Road No. 32 North), with completion rates reaching 92.8% for Phase I and 64% for Phase II by March. The Sezad also seen the beginning of construction works for internal roads in Block 52, as well as the coastal road project overlooking the Arabian Sea, which links the tourism area with the fishing port, the fisheries and food industries complex, and several existing and planned tourism facilities.
Eng Ahmed bin Ali Akaak, CEO of Sezad , stated that road projects in the zone aim to enhance Duqm’s attractiveness and readiness to attract further investments, while connecting existing developments through a modern network of dual and single carriageways that facilitate movement for investors, residents, citizens and tourists.
He added in a statement to the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the projects focus on strengthening logistical connectivity between industrial, commercial, logistics and tourism zones, enhancing mobility services across various investment areas, and enabling smooth access to key locations, thereby boosting the competitiveness of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm and its ability to attract more local and international companies.
The combined length of Phase I and Phase II of the dualisation project is approximately 50 km, including 26 km of main road and over 22 km of service roads. The project connects Duqm city centre with the Duqm Refinery, the medium industries area, and the heavy industries zone, and facilitates traffic flow for those arriving via the Sinaw–Mahout–Duqm road.
This year also saw the opening of the southern section of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road, spanning 10 km of the main carriageway, starting from the end of the dual carriageway in Saay village and ending at the existing roundabout on Sultan Qaboos Street towards Duqm Airport. The road links the city centre with Duqm Airport, oil storage facilities, and renewable energy projects, while providing seamless connectivity for visitors arriving from Dhofar Governorate and the wilayats of Haima and Al Jazir.
The coastal road is the latest major road in the zone and represents a qualitative addition to infrastructure in Duqm’s tourism area. The 14 km road includes a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction, a service road, and four roundabouts to enhance connectivity between the areas it serves. The project also includes the construction of surface water drainage culverts, open channels in line with a modern drainage system, as well as signage, concrete and steel barriers, and other works.
The road aims to develop the transport system within the zone’s masterplan, enhance its attractiveness for tourism investments and related economic activities, and extends along routes offering scenic natural views, including coastal landscapes, natural hills, and future development sites.
Eng Hussain bin Ali Al Zadjali, Acting CEO at Tatweer Duqm, said that road projects in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm carry multiple economic dimensions, facilitating movement for residents, investors and businesses, while strengthening the zone’s capacity to attract new investments. He noted that projects implemented in recent years have contributed to creating opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and expanding investment activities.
He added that Tatweer Duqm, as the executive and investment arm of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (Opaz), is committed to ensuring that road projects are implemented in accordance with the latest engineering standards, enhancing infrastructure efficiency, improving traffic flow, and supporting economic and social development efforts.
