Beirut--- The second round of talks between Lebanon and Israel is being held later today in Washington, marking the first negotiations between the two sides since a ten‑day ceasefire took effect.
A US State Department official said that, as in the previous round, the talks will include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Israeli Ambassador to Washington Yechiel Leiter, and Lebanese Ambassador to the United States Nada Hamadeh Moawad. US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa and US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee are also attending.
The two countries held their first round of talks in Washington on 14 April 2026 — the first such negotiations since 1993 — in an attempt to end the war.
A Lebanese official source said Lebanon would request a one‑month extension of the truce, which expires at the end of this week, along with a halt to Israeli demolition and destruction operations in areas where Israeli forces are present, and full adherence to the ceasefire.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced on Wednesday that communications were ongoing to extend the ceasefire period. According to a statement from the presidency, the negotiations being prepared are based on a complete cessation of Israeli attacks and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.
During the first meeting, both countries agreed to launch direct negotiations “at a time and place to be mutually agreed upon,” a State Department spokesperson said at the time.
