Electronic census of population approved in Oman

Muscat: A work plan and model for conducting an electronic census of population was approved for housing and establishments by the Supreme National Committee for Electronic Census of Population, Housings and Establishments (SNCECPHE 2020).
The committee organised its second meeting for 2016, which was chaired by the Minister of Heritage and Culture and Chairman of the committee, His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq Al Said. The committee reviewed a number of items listed on the agenda.
The plan is an outcome of several meetings held to assess the current status of the public organisations, which are the main source for data that will be used for the e-census project.
The work plan includes work methodology and a proposed time frame for implementation.
Further, the committee also approved the formation of a technical committee that will study the comprehensive plan for the census, as well as the phased-out plans, follow the implementation, provide human resources and will eliminate challenges that might appear during the execution of the census.
It also discussed the standard address system, which is supervised by the National Centre for Statistic and Information, in coordination with several relevant organisations.
The project is at the second stage at which a central database will be developed to facilitate easy access to information and data by public organisations and linking such data to their systems.
The address system is one of the important strategic projects for the Sultanate as it aims to move from a descriptive address to the digital address, which facilitates reaching any address.
SNCECPHE 2020 is the fourth census to be ordered by the Sultanate since the dawn of the Blessed Renaissance.
The outputs of the previous censuses have contributed to preparing health, education, social and development plans for Oman. They also help in conducting statistical field surveys and studies.
