Muscat: The Medical City Hospital for Military and Security Services has successfully performed a delicate surgical procedure to remove a cancerous kidney tumour using a surgical robot. This achievement reflects the hospital's commitment to adopting the latest medical technologies and enhancing the quality of healthcare services.
The procedure was performed using an advanced robotic surgical system that provides high-resolution 3D visualisation and precise control of surgical instruments. This enabled the removal of the tumour while preserving the healthy portion of the kidney. A similar procedure was also performed on another patient in the same specialty using video conferencing technology.
Both surgeries were performed by Major (Dr) Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Rashidi, Senior Consultant Urologist, using robotic and endoscopic techniques. He received comprehensive support from the anaesthesia, nursing, and allied medical staff. Both operations were successful.
The use of surgical robots contributes to enhanced precision in surgical procedures by providing high-definition 3D visualisation and precise instruments with a wide range of motion that mimics the movement of the human hand with high stability. This facilitates more efficient operations in confined and complex spaces.
This achievement is in line with the goals of "Oman Vision 2040" to develop an advanced health system based on innovation and modern technologies, and confirms the readiness of national competencies to keep pace with the latest advancements in medicine in the field of microsurgery.
