Oman’s Public Services Regulation Authority signs MoU with Rostock University

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Public Services Regulation Authority, has signed a memorandum of understanding with University of Rostock in the Germany to strengthen cooperation in sustainable waste management and the development of circular economy applications.

The agreement reflects the authority’s efforts to benefit from leading international expertise in resource management and maximizing the economic value of waste, supporting the transition toward circular economy models while enhancing environmental and economic sustainability.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Public Services Regulation Authority by Hassan bin Mohammed Al Lawati, Director General of Economic Regulation and Markets, while Professor Elizabeth, President of the University of Rostock, signed on behalf of the German side.

The agreement aims to promote scientific and technical cooperation between the two sides in developing advanced models for sustainable waste management. It also focuses on adopting global best practices in raising environmental awareness, promoting waste sorting at source, improving recycling processes, reducing reliance on landfills, and transforming waste into valuable economic resources—supporting circular economy objectives.

Additionally, the memorandum seeks to strengthen institutional capacities and develop human resources at the Public Services Regulation Authority, particularly in areas related to legislative frameworks, regulatory policies, and modern strategies for organizing the waste management sector in Oman. The initiative will benefit from Germany’s advanced experience in the field to enhance economic efficiency and environmental sustainability in the sector.

As part of the signing program, the Omani delegation conducted field visits to research facilities and laboratories at the University of Rostock, as well as waste management facilities in the city of Rostock. The visits highlighted the latest technologies and practical experiences in waste management and resource recovery, alongside specialized discussions on opportunities for joint research and technical collaboration to develop innovative solutions supporting the transition to a circular economy.

The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Metha bint Saif Al Mahrouqi, Ambassador of Oman to Germany, in addition to academics, specialists, and experts in waste management and environmental sustainability from the University of Rostock.
