Charity Committee in Nizwa launches initiatives to benefit 8,000 needy people during Ramadan

Nizwa--- In preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, the Zakat and Charity Committee in the Wilayat of Nizwa in Governorate of A’Dakhiliyah, recently launched a package of integrated Ramadan initiatives that will contribute to the needs of more than 8,000 beneficiaries.

The initiatives stem from the committee's efforts aimed at supporting needy families and consolidating pillars of social solidarity in the Wilayat of Nizwa.

Dr. Mohammed Khamis Al Riyami, Chairman of the Zakat and Charity Committee in the Wilayat of Nizwa, said that this year’s Ramadan plan includes the distribution of more than 800 food boxes to the target groups, in cooperation with charitable organizations.

The process also deals with the distribution of electronic food vouchers to more than 1,300 families, said Al Riyami, noting that this will enhance flexibility in meeting the needs of families while at the same time maintaining their dignity.

He added that during the last 10 days of Ramadan, the committee will distribute sums of “Zakat al Mal” worth not less that RO 300,000 to the needy . The number of beneficiaries of Ramadan fasting-related "Zakat Al Fitr" this year stands at more than 8,000 people, said Al Riyami, noting that the Zakat funds are aimed to enrich the poor and bring joy to their families on the day of Eid.

Al Riyami explained that the committee has prepared a media plan to raise awareness about the importance of Zakat and its social and humanitarian effects. The plan includes a statement to be delivered (during sermons) on the first Friday of Ramadan, in addition to lectures and seminars that will outline the Zakat system and its legal and social dimensions, said Al Riyami.

The committee is embarked on the establishment of a building dedicated to “Endowment for the Poor” (Waqf Al Fuqaraa), which will serve as a sustainable endowment project to develop resources and ensure the sustainability of social security and expand the base of beneficiaries in the Wilayat, Al Riyami added.
