Muscat: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has issued public guidelines to help consumers distinguish between original and counterfeit goods, as part of its ongoing efforts to raise consumer awareness and combat commercial fraud.
In an awareness infographic shared by the authority, the CPA outlined several key indicators that consumers should examine when purchasing products, particularly branded goods.
The authority advised consumers to carefully inspect the trademark or logo, noting that original products carry logos applied with extreme precision, while counterfeit goods often show slight differences in font, spacing, or design.
Attention was also drawn to the quality of materials, with the CPA stressing that texture and scent — especially in leather goods and perfumes — are among the most important indicators of authenticity. Original products typically use high-quality, durable materials.
The CPA further highlighted the importance of examining packaging, explaining that genuine products feature clear printing, high-quality paper, and accurate information, whereas counterfeit goods often contain spelling mistakes, faded colours, or poor packaging quality.
Consumers were also urged to verify the serial number of products and ensure it matches the information available on the manufacturer’s official website.
Regarding pricing, the authority warned that products offered at prices that appear “too good to be true” compared to official market prices are highly likely to be counterfeit.
In addition, the CPA recommended checking the country of origin to confirm the original manufacturing source of the product.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers’ rights and encouraged the public to report any suspected counterfeit goods through official communication channels.
