MUSCAT: The Oman Golf Association (OGA) celebrated the exceptional performances of its national golf teams at a felicitation ceremony held on Tuesday at the Oman Olympic Committee headquarters, with Vice-Chairman Faiz Mohammed Riaz delivering a stirring message to the country’s young athletes.
The senior OGA official said: “We are proud of every one of you, and special congratulations to those who won medals for our country. Wearing the national colours and playing for Oman is a great honour and responsibility. Winning is important, but not everything - participation, commitment, and discipline are equally vital. You are role models for the next generation. Keep pushing, keep believing, and keep making Oman proud.”
Faiz Mohammed Riaz emphasised the duty of players to give back to the nation through hard work, dedication, and consistent participation in major tournaments. “Not showing up is where a clear line is drawn. Commitment, discipline, and responsibility are non-negotiable,” he added, calling on all athletes to uphold Oman’s sporting reputation with pride and professionalism.
The call to excellence came as Oman’s junior golfers delivered stellar performances on home and regional stages. At the 2025 GCC Ladies and Juniors Golf Championship, hosted by the Oman Golf Association at Ghala Golf Club in December, 12-year-old Yusuf Al Rumhy successfully defended his U13 individual crown, finishing with a commanding total of 161 strokes, ahead of Bahrain’s Mohamed Waheed (172) and Khalifa Al Fadhala (177).
Yusuf also teamed up with Ibrahim Faiz Riaz and Taimur Al Busaidi to claim silver in the U13 team event, overcoming the challenge of Taimur’s late withdrawal due to illness.
Meanwhile, Mohib Al Kathiri secured bronze in the U16 boys’ individual competition, capping Oman’s medal tally at the championship and signaling the rise of a new generation of golfing talent.
Earlier last February, Oman’s U18 boys’ team made history at the GCC Golf Championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, winning the nation’s first-ever gold medal in the category. The trio of Adam Al Barwani, Mahir Sampat, and Pransh Jagwani finished level with Kuwait on total score but clinched gold on countback, with Adam also earning individual silver. The victory was hailed as a landmark moment for Omani junior golf, reflecting years of structured training, competitive exposure, and relentless dedication under the OGA’s youth development programme.
OGA Secretary-General Ahmed Al Jhdhamy praised the achievements, highlighting the importance of consistent preparation and international exposure: “These victories reflect the talent, hard work, and resilience of our young golfers. Hosting championships and competing against the best in the Gulf provides invaluable experience that will shape the champions of tomorrow.”
Tuesday’s felicitation ceremony brought together national team players, coaches, and federation officials, celebrating medal winners while honouring all participants for their commitment to the sport.
The event served not only to recognise past achievements but also to inspire young golfers to uphold Oman’s sporting prestige with pride, discipline, and passion.
In his message to young golfers, Faiz Mohammed Riaz said: “Each of you carries the honour of Oman when you step onto the course. Play with pride, represent your nation with dignity, and continue to make Oman proud on every stage - regional, Gulf, and international.”
Also on this occasion, the men, women golfers were honoured for their participation in GCC meets. Among those present were Ahmed Al Wahaibi, Badr Al Amri, Wafa Al Hadhrami, Umaima Al Abri, Yasmin Al Kathiri, Heba Al Nabhani and Miraeri Sampat.
Oman’s recent successes signal a new era for golf in the Sultanate, with young stars like Yusuf, Ibrahim, Taimur, Adam, Mahir, and Pransh embodying the potential and promise of the country’s rising golfing talent. The OGA remains committed to nurturing these athletes, providing them with the training, exposure, and competitive opportunities needed to turn promise into podium finishes.
