India-Russia expand maritime relations in shipbuilding, training

New Delhi: India and Russia have recently expanded their maritime cooperation, focusing on shipbuilding, Arctic-capable maritime activities, and new trade routes between the Indian Ocean and the Russian Far East. This initiative signifies what Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, describes as “a new era of maritime connectivity and global cooperation.”

This ambitious agenda was outlined during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India from December 4 to 5, where he and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took significant steps towards strengthening economic ties. They set a goal to boost bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2030, with shipping and logistics identified as critical growth areas.

Sonowal emphasized the strategic importance of the India-Russia partnership, notably in shipbuilding and the establishment of new trade routes, such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Chennai-Vladivostok corridor. He described this collaboration as a “win-win” scenario that not only furthers India’s “Make in India” initiative but also generates jobs and fosters a shared maritime future.

This development represents a pivotal shift in India’s maritime strategy, enhancing its global maritime presence while strengthening ties with Russia. The partnership is expected to facilitate smoother logistical operations, improving trade flows and promoting economic growth for both nations. By leveraging India’s shipbuilding capabilities and expertise, alongside Russia’s experience and resources, both countries aim to create a more interconnected and prosperous maritime landscape.
